beginner photography workshops

This series of workshops will introduce you to the wonderful world of photography. You will learn how to use a camera to take creative and inspiring photographs.

The 4 one-day workshops can either be taken as a full course or alternatively, you are welcome to participate in individual workshops depending on your interests.

The workshops are not sequential, and ALL are open to absolute beginners.

Suitable for DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex), Mirrorless and Bridge Camera users.

If you own one of these cameras and have never taken a picture off ‘Auto’, then this series of workshops is just right for you!

Learn about aperture and shutter speed and how to make the composition of your pictures more creative. Each workshop will consist of a series of short presentations, you will receive a copy of this for your reference. The course will have plenty of fun creative challenges and full technical support will be given throughout. The focus is on creativity and how photography can be used as an escape or reprieve from everyday life, a way of spending a bit of time to look at the world around us in a different way!

Where: Baronsmede Support Services Ltd, The Barn Centre, Cooks Corner Farm, London Road, Crowborough, East Sussex TN6 1TQ.

Cost: £80 per person per workshop (5 hrs). This includes refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits) and a copy of the workshop presentation.

Workshop 1: Saturday 10th May, 11.00am-4.00pm  – Program Mode

In this workshop we will explore the benefits of taking pictures in Program Mode. Learn the difference between Jpeg and RAW files, as well as how to take different types of pictures, for example black and white.

You will learn the finer points of focusing and be given tuition on how to control the lightness or darkness of your pictures.

Workshop 2: Saturday 24th May, 11.00am-4.00pm – Shutter Mode

During this workshop you will learn the control of how the camera records time and motion. Creative techniques such as panning, motion blur, freezing motion and even how to make ghost photography. Learn the importance of tripods (if you don’t have your own, they will be provided) and get the chance to explore the creative effects of the shutter in a variety of innovative tasks and group activities.

Workshop 3: Saturday 7th June, 11.00am-4.00pm – Aperture Mode

Aperture is perhaps the most used of the camera effects. In this workshop you will learn how the aperture affects both exposure and depth of field. You will learn how to control focus and depth of field to make the most of this fascinating camera technique. The workshop will involve a series of short presentations, creative challenges and group activities to help you make interesting and engaging photographs.

Workshop 4: Saturday 21st June, 11.00am-4.00pm – Manual Mode

This is the mode where we take full control of the camera and is the best way to learn how cameras work. We will explore the exposure triangle and how aperture, shutter speed and ISO all play a role in exposure. We will also be exploring creative effects and techniques specific to aperture and the shutter and how to create these in manual mode. The workshop will consist of short presentations, creative challenges and group activities to help you learn the featured camera skills.
